AkeleyAkeley is home to Paul Bunyan, and no one can resist hopping into Paul's cupped hand for a picture with the gentle giant. The famous Crow Wing Chain of Lakes ends here, offering a variety of lakes and activities. A drive in the countryside shows the diversity of the area as you pass pastures filled with horses and traditional farmlands.
The famous Woodtick Theater calls Akeley home, and people travel far and wide to see the show that will leave them talking, laughing, and singing the tunes for days afterwards. Billed as "bringing music and comedy to the Northwoods since 1992," this in no amateur production! The talent up here is phenomenal and this theater showcases some of the best of the best. To get a true feel for Akeley and the surrounding area, the Paul Bunyan Historical Museum is the place to start. Learn about the history of the area and see remnants of the Akeley sawmill that was once the largest in the state. Sixty years ago, residents of Akeley dreamed up Paul Bunyan Days, and the event has grown to mega proportions (like Paul, himself!). Three days in the end of June are devoted to this event, each day chock-full of food, fun, and games for the entire family. Akeley may be one of the smallest towns in the area, but the people here are just as industrious, creative, and driven as in the "big city." The main street hosts a variety of shops from antique stores and ice cream shops to beauty salons and hardware stores. Akeley has a lot to offer residents and visitors. |
